In the insurance doghouse

Dog bites account for more than one-third of all homeowner’s insurance claims with an average payout of nearly $30,000 per claim.

Insurers have tried to “muzzle” those costs in a variety of ways, including refusing to extend coverage to people who own a dog that has bitten someone. Most insurers maintain lists of dogs they do not want to insure. American Kennel Club believes insurers “should determine coverage based on the dog’s deeds, not the dog’s breed”. But the $489 million paid out in dog bite claims in a year have lead to a refusal to insure certain breeds.

Some of the breeds that have been singled out in recent years as undesirable by insurance carriers include:

* Staffordshire bull terriers, American Staffordshire terrier, and bull terrier - all breeds we call “pit bulls.
* Doberman Pinschers
* Rottweiler
* Akita
* “Husky” (Siberian huskies and malamutes)
* German Shepherd
* Cane Corso
* Mastiff

So, consider how that adorable little ball of fluff could impact your homeowner’s insurance before bringing him home.
